History:

The Mavericks were founded in 2000. Over a few beers (okay, more than a few beers) we decided it would be cool to sponsor a chuckwagon driver at the Calgary Stampede. In a few short weeks
we put together an organization to raise the money necessary to bid on the tarp at the Stampede auction. To our delight we successfully bid and won the sponsorship rights to Larry McEwen. This set the stage for our ongoing success in building a focused, cohesive, successful group.

Upon Larry’s retirement the Mavericks selected Brian Laboucane at the Rangeland Tarp auction for 2006. Brian and the Mavericks had a great 2006 season and Brian automatically qualified by coming in 11th overall.

In 2007 the Mavericks selected Grant Preece from the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association as their Driver for the Rangeland Derby.

In 2008 the Mavericks selected two Drivers at the Rangeland Derby auction. Brian Laboucane teamed up with the Mavericks again and Leo Tournier drove under the new Friends of Mavericks tarp. This was our most successful year at the Rangeland Derby as Brian placed 5th Overall and Leo took top money one day at the track!

In 2009 the Mavericks also selected Brain and Leo to represent the Maverick Team.

The Mavericks are now a group of 25 businessmen. Like most successful people, we all care deeply about giving back to our community. We recognized very early in our history that we could leverage the cachet that surrounds the Chuckwagon Races at the Calgary Stampede to help us raise funds to support community needs. We also ensure that all money raised through our fund raising efforts goes directly to our charity giving. All operational funding required is met only through membership dues.

Charity:

The Mavericks Charities (click here) include a variety of Calgary and area Not-for-profit agencies. The majority of our support has gone to assist Children's Link Society. Our funding for The Children's Link Society now amounts to about 25% of their annual budget requirements.

The Mavericks are especially proud of our "Mavericks Families in Crisis Fund". This fund was established to help out qualified people with very small amounts of crisis funding to deal with sudden issues. See Crisis Fund.

On January 20th 2008 the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club presented their first “Western Night” at the game. As part of the festivities the Maverick Chuckwagon Society sponsored their inaugural “Mini Chuckwagon Race” between the periods. The race featured two World Professional Chuckwagon Drivers Mark Sutherland and Colt Cosgrave along with announcer Les Macintyre. The event raised over $10,000 for the Children’s Link Society and other children’s Charities. The Mavericks would like to thank everyone who participated especially Foresters and Westkal Energy who sponsored the tarps and to the Springbank Atom’s 7 Devils Hockey Club who were the thoroughbreds. We look forward to next years event!

We have also provided smaller amounts of funding to: The Alberta Children's' Hospital Foundation, The Calgary Ups and Downs Society, The Between Friends Club, The Cerebral Palsy Association and the Rainbow Society of Alberta.

On January 18th 2009 the Mavericks conducted their 2nd Annual Mini Chuckwagon race in conjunction with the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club. Defending Champion Mark Sutherland and reigning WPCA Champion Jason Glass volunteered their time to drive the Chuckwagons and the horse power was provided by the Trails Atom West Tazers hockey team. Announcing the race is the voice of the WPCA and the new track announcer at the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby Les Macintyre. The event raised over $6,000 towards the Children’s Link Society and other Children’s Charities.

As a group we recognize that there are a number of very small, usually one time requirements. The Mavericks have funded a number of these. They include: providing funding for prosthetic devices for a young girl who lost part of her leg to cancer, and helping a young family with money to renovate their house to allow their severely handicapped young daughter to move about freely.

In 2008 the Maverick’s surpassed the 1 million dollar mark in their fundraising towards the Children’s Link Society and other Children’s’ Charities and Causes.

The Mavericks main fundraiser is the Mavericks Golf Classic that’s held each year at the Springbank Links Golf Club. In 2010 the Mavericks will embark in a new and larger event by moving to the Country Hills Golf Club. The new event will be called the Country Hills Charity Golf Classic, hosted by the Mavericks. It will be a 36 hole 54 team event which will be one of the largest tournaments in the City of Calgary. It will be held on Tuesday June 15th. If you are interested in sponsoring or entering a team please contact us.
