Charity

The Mavericks recognize that helping those in need is the hallmark of a progressive, caring organization. Over the last several years we have supported a variety of children's causes. In addition, we are proud to have established the Mavericks Families in Crisis Fund.

Children's Link Society:
The Children's Link Society has been the major beneficiary of the majority of our funding for the last 4 years. For 2008 we donated $96,000 to the Children's Link Society. The Mavericks' funding contribution comprises approximately 25% of their yearly budget. For more detailed information about the Children's Link Society, visit them at their website: www.childrenslink.ca. We believe that our responsibility does not end with a cash donation. The Mavericks also believe there is significant value in using our business connections and skills to help improve the development and delivery of programs at the Children's Link Society. Consequently, the Mavericks appoints one representative to the Board of Directors of the Children's Link Society.

On January 20th 2008 the Calgary Hitmen Hockey Club presented their first “Western Night” at the game. As part of the festivities the Maverick Chuckwagon Society sponsored their inaugural “Mini Chuckwagon Race” between the periods. The race featured two World Professional Chuckwagon Drivers Mark Sutherland and Colt Cosgrave along with announcer Les Macintyre. The event raised over $10,000 for the Children’s Link Society and other children’s Charities. The Mavericks would like to thank everyone who participated especially Foresters and Westkal Energy who sponsored the tarps and to the Springbank Atom’s 7 Devils Hockey Club who were the thoroughbreds. We look forward to next years event!

Between Friends Club: Between Friends develops and conducts programs for children and young adults with disabilities. The programs offered allow the young people the opportunity to socialize with others in various activities like bowling, swimming and climbing. The Mavericks donated $2,200 to allow 12 young people attend programs at the Between Friends summer camp.

ZooSchool:
The ZooSchool program allows students from low income families the chance to participate in a week long education class at the Calgary Zoo. The Mavericks donation of $900 gave a class of 33 students the chance to take part in the class.

Kids Cancer Care Foundation:
The Kids Cancer Care Foundation provides programs and activities for children suffering from cancer. The Mavericks donated $1,000 to the general program fund.

Ups and Downs Society:
The Ups and Downs Society assists people with Down Syndrome. The Mavericks donated $500 and prizes to the Ups and Downs Charity Golf Tournament.

Individual Donations:
One of the strongest attributes of the Mavericks Charity program is our ability to react quickly to small needs from individuals. Over the years we have made several, small one time contributions. These include:
1) Samantha - this young girl needed help to purchase proper prosthetic devices after losing part of her leg to cancer.

2) Eric - The Mavericks helped Eric (the 2002 Alberta Children's Hospital "Champion Child" and his family visit Disneyland.

3) The Rainbow Society - A 14 year old girl referred to us by the Rainbow Society suffers from Cerebral Palsy. The Mavericks purchased a computer for her to make her life a little easier.

4) Alacia - Alacia's parents need to make necessary renovations to the family home to allow a better quality of life for Alacia. The Mavericks donated $3,800 toward the renovation cost.
